I am off for a conference, fully paid by BSA! (or may be NOT)

I was super delighted to read this message today (Tuesday, April 13, 2010 2:33 AM):

Dear Rashid Al-Yahyai,
Together with my Conference Team I cordially invite you to the 4th BSA International Biological Science Research Conference, which will be held in London, United Kingdom, June 1st-4th, 2010. The conference is co-sponsored by the British Science Association (BSA) and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. The Lloyds TSB Bank also provides collaborative support for the conference. The theme of this year's conference is "Advancements in Plant Science and Environmental Stress" and the conference will highlight the advancements and new developments in Plant Science
All renowned biological scientists will be at the conference and you are no exception. Participants should arrive Tuesday, June 1st, as we will hold an informal social hour that evening from 5:30-7:30pm. Sandwiches, some glasses of wine and champagne should give you enough energy to stroll on your own afterwards and catch the special atmosphere of London. The conference is scheduled for Wednesday, June 2nd, from 8:00am-5:30pm and Thursday, June 3rd, from 8:00am-5:30pm, and the Friday Workshop will be held from 8:00am- Noon. A social hour will follow each of the Wednesday and Thursday sessions.
We will be offering two $140,000USD Research grants to selected presentations/abstracts. You are therefore encouraged to submit your abstract for consideration and possible selection for the research grant. In addition, your abstract, if selected would be published at the next issue of the reputable Science Journal. Please ensure to send your abstract topic with respect to the conference theme within 3days for consideration.
This year's conference will be held at the Ritz Hotel, London at 150 Piccadilly, London, United Kingdom, W1J 9BR. Please note that accommodation and return flight tickets from your country of residence would be provided for selected abstracts.

We are looking forward to seeing you in London!
Sincerely,
PROF. Dr. DAVID RUSTERHOLZ
President, British Science Association

Sounds great right!!

Sadly, I am not going to stay at The Ritz Hotel, nor I am getting those 140 grands!
This is obviously a "great spam worth sharing"!!
How did I know it was a spam:

  1. It is suspicious that out of the blue they name me (I can not even be called a biologist!) to be invited for this high-profile conference
  2. I have no interest in wine or champaign!
  3. Science Journal will not take my abstract and just publish it! (also wondering why not Nature, since the conference is in Britain :)
  4. BSA president is Lord May not David!. BTW: They do not use (as for the BSA abbreviation, they state "The name will always be used in its full form and will never be abbreviated to BSA")!
  5. What really drew my attention was the email, a hotmail, instead of his own email!

So there you go, lost my chance again!!! DARN you BSA!

  1. Well, the real British Science Association is sorry that such a tempting offer has proved a mirage. But you would be very welcome to the Science Communication Conference 24/25 May in London (not at the Ritz) or the British Science Festival 14/19 September in Birmingham. But there would be a fee!

  2. Thank you Mr. Roland Jackson for you comment and for the invitation to the Science Communication Conference!
If there was anything that I got from that spam email, it was learning about British Science Association that I did not know even existed before.
I hope I can make it to London some day and attend the conference or the festival.
Best of luck to your association, Rashid.

Hello. I have received a similar email, but Dr. David Rusterholz that belongs to the Organization Science Zurich ZOR. Nothing found on the Internet about this institution, if it exists. It seemed odd to use a live.com account.

This contact is false right? That interest may have to send something? Some kind of scam? Greetings

  6. Someone emailed me today (deleted his name) a "David Rusterholz" spam that reads:

    ___________________________
Hi _______, I have been instructed to mail you an official invite to the ZOR International Research conference coming up in London in July and the organizers are interested in your research area "WHETHER PREVIOUSLY APPLIED SUBMUCOUS ANAESTHESIA DIMINISHES DISCOMFORT DURING PERIODONTAL LIGAMENT INJECTION."

We have noticed that this is your area of specialization. If you are interested in knowing more, advise immediately by replying this email because the conference committee is also awarding research grants for accepted papers and you stand a chance to use this grant to further your research in your scientific field.

    Best Regards,
    Dr. David Rusterholz
